HackLab at Sea

Naantali Archipelago, July 2010

Participants: Marije Baalman (NL), Jim Bollansee (BE), David Griffith (UK/FI), Tuomo Tammenpää (FI), host Tapio Mäkelä (FI)

Few artists and developers joined M.A.R.I.N. Hacklab at the Sea during some of the hottest days in Finnish history on an island in Naantali archipelago, to develop concepts around sensors and the environment. Due to temperatures rising up to +34C, also lot of swimming was involved. An outdoors kitchen became a lab for electronics, food and concepts.

Marije Baalman developed further her Sonobotanics project; a modular, sculptural enviornmentally reactive sound installation.

Jim Bollansee worked with the rest of the lab to turn a radio controlled toy boat into a gps / autonomously driven sensor station. Like many things addressed and developed, this was a quick prototype that showed that with more time and gear, it can be done.

David Griffith was looking at concepts of using a certain amount of energy from the environment to drive a sensor to arrive at a natural cycle in sensing.

Tuomo Tammenpää worked on a sensor toy boat and DIY microscopy.

Tapio Mäkelä did work on Blue Green, a blue green algae installation that was running in Rauma Art Museum; a self-sustainable system that optimized growth of cyanobacteria harvested from a Baltic Sea Bay, as well as contributed to cooking and hacking.

This was a non-funded project, where everyone contributed.
