Ecolocated: Littoral Lives is a project by two artists, Tapio Mäkelä (FI) and Nigel Helyer (AU) in collaboration with the AudioNomad software team, Daniel Woo (AU), and Michael Lake (AU).
Ecolocated is an exploration of littoral zones near Belfast and Cumbria, areas where human impact on the marine ecology is strongest and where local communities have a long association with the sea. The term littoral describes the juncture between land and sea, where the experience of the sea as an every day environment for marine life, work and leisure meets with historical and romantic sensibilities.
Ecolocated locative audiovisual installation combines marine ecology data with sound, and stills; interviews with scientists and local communities and data sonifications. The work was carried through a residency in Belfast prior to ISEA2009. Exhibition was set up at Catalyst Arts Gallery with great support from local artists and producers.
